The Government Opposition Chief Whip John Baptist Nambeshe has survived lynching from a heated group of mob accusing him for knocking a person before speeding off.
Nambeshe who has been from Kampala heading to Mbaale knocked a person at Namwezi along Kampala-Jinja highway in Njeru Municipality Buikwe district this morning at around 10am.
Juma Kanamwangi, an eye witness says instead of Nambeshe stopping to help the injured person, he instead drove off before bodaboda riders started following him.
“None of us thought that it was Nambeshe, after the incident we realized the vehicle had a government red number plate for which we thought it must be driven by an official who understands the law better than us the locals but instead chose to take off after the incident. The vehicle was moving at a very high speed.” Kanamwangi says.
The mob managed to intercept Nambeshe in traffic jam following another accident that had happened at Kisoga zone in Mbikko involving two trailer trucks No. UBE 158Q and UBE 640Q together with a motorcycle No. UEM 175M whose rider has identified as Sharif Kyakire, 38, a worker at Kampala cement has died on the spot.
The mob started beating up Nambeshe’ vehicle at the same time threatening to burn it.
Jimmy Lwanga the Njeru Municipality Member of Parliament notes that the Chief Whip has been lucky that some National Unity Platform supporters managed to identify him and assisted traffic police to rescue before taking him for a safe custody at Njeru police station.
Hellen Butoto, the Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson says the person knocked by Nambeshe whose names are yet to be established has been rushed to Jinja hospital for treatment after sustaining body injuries.
She condemns the habit of over speeding saying Nambeshe is still at Njeru police station to assist them carryout proper investigations. She also condemns people who wanted to stage mob against him.
Meanwhile, Butoto reveals that the body of Kyakire has been taken to Jinja hospital mortuary and the truck driver No. UBE 640Q Martin Kyakulaga, 44, has been detained at Njeru police.
