Bulemeezi County FC is mourning the death of midfielder Rogers Sebyondwa, who passed away after suffering serious injuries during a Buganda Kingdom Masaza Cup fixture against Kyaggwe County FC.

Sebyondwa was injured on Sunday, August 2, after colliding with Kyaggwe’s goalkeeper during the group stage encounter at Kasana Sports Ground in Luwero District.

Medical personnel attended to him on the pitch before he was rushed to a nearby health facility. As his condition worsened, he was referred to Mulago National Referral Hospital, where he died on Wednesday morning.

His death has shocked the Buganda football community and cast a sombre mood over the ongoing Masaza Cup tournament, with players, supporters and officials paying tribute to the fallen footballer.

In a statement, Bulemeezi County FC Media Officer Emmanuel Mugeere described Sebyondwa’s passing as a painful loss to the club and the wider football family.

“It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved player, Rogers Sebyondwa. This is a heartbreaking loss for the entire Bulemeezi family, his teammates, relatives, Masaza supporters and the football fraternity,” Mugeere said.

He praised Sebyondwa’s commitment and dedication to the team, saying his contribution both on and off the pitch would be remembered.

“His passion for the game, commitment to the club and the memories he created with us will remain in our hearts forever,” he added.

A spectator who witnessed the incident, Musa Lwanga, said the injury resulted from what appeared to be an accidental collision as both players challenged for the ball.

Despite the incident, Kyaggwe County FC won the match 1-0 to strengthen its position in the Masengere Group, while Bulemeezi suffered another defeat in its campaign.

According to Mugeere, Sebyondwa’s body was transferred from Mulago Hospital to Wobulenzi-Kikoma Village and taken to the home of Mzee Kibule. Funeral and burial arrangements, together with an official tribute programme, will be announced later.

He appealed to supporters and members of the public to keep the bereaved family, teammates and friends in their prayers during this difficult period.

Before the tragic incident, Bulemeezi had recorded one win, one draw and three losses in five Masaza Cup matches, including a 1-0 away victory over Busiro County FC on July 19. Sebyondwa’s death has since overshadowed the team’s campaign, leaving the Buganda football fraternity mourning the loss of one of its players.
