Former Butambala County Member of Parliament Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi has reportedly been taken away by armed men just hours after being released on bail in a terrorism case, according to the Leader of the Opposition, Joel Ssenyonyi.
In a post published on his X account on Thursday evening, Ssenyonyi alleged that Kivumbi was intercepted while travelling back to Kampala from Butambala.
“We’ve just learnt that on his way back to Kampala from Butambala a short while ago, Hon Muwanga Kivumbi’s car was stopped at a military roadblock in Mpigi, and armed men moving in a drone have taken him away to an unknown location!”

The claim comes only hours after the International Crimes Division of the High Court granted Kivumbi bail following nearly six months on remand over terrorism-related charges.
Lady Justice Susan Okalany released Kivumbi on a cash bail of UGX 10 million and imposed several conditions, including monthly reporting to the International Crimes Division and the Butambala Magistrates Court, surrendering his passport and obtaining court permission before travelling outside Uganda.
Kivumbi and 16 of his co-accused were released after the court ruled that they had met the legal requirements for bail despite objections from the prosecution.
As of Friday evening, there had been no official statement from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), the Uganda Police Force or other security agencies regarding Ssenyonyi’s claims or Kivumbi’s reported whereabouts.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged interception remain unclear, and it is not immediately known why Kivumbi was reportedly taken away after his release.
The development has sparked concern among supporters of the opposition National Unity Platform, who had earlier celebrated his release from detention.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available or when security agencies issue an official response.
