IGG Intervention Eases Maternity Ward Pressure At Masaka Regional Referral Hospital

The Inspector General of Government (IGG), Lady Justice Naluzze Aisha Batala, has fulfilled her pledge to support maternal healthcare services at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital by donating 10 orthopedic mattresses to the facility’s maternity ward.

The donation follows an impromptu inspection of the hospital conducted by the Inspectorate of Government earlier this year, during which the IGG identified gaps affecting service delivery, particularly the shortage of essential maternity equipment.

On February 11, 2026, Lady Justice Naluzze led a team from the Inspectorate of Government on a monitoring visit to the Greater Masaka Region. The visit was aimed at assessing the quality of public services and responding to concerns raised by citizens about challenges affecting service delivery in government institutions.

During the inspection of Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, the team visited the maternity ward and observed that expectant mothers and new mothers were facing difficulties due to inadequate orthopedic mattresses.

Concerned by the situation, the IGG pledged to provide 10 orthopedic mattresses to help improve the comfort and care of mothers seeking services at the regional referral facility.

The mattresses were officially handed over to the hospital by the Inspectorate of Government’s Masaka Regional Head, Samuel Agaba, on behalf of Lady Justice Naluzze.

Receiving the donation, Masaka Regional Referral Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Mary Nyantaro thanked the IGG for the timely intervention, saying the support would contribute to improving maternal healthcare services.

Dr. Nyantaro revealed that although the hospital’s newly constructed maternity ward has a capacity of 400 beds, the facility currently has only about 50 beds, including 30 fitted with orthopedic mattresses.

She said the shortage continues to put pressure on healthcare delivery, given that the hospital handles between 30 and 60 deliveries every day.

“The donation comes at a critical time because we continue to experience a shortage of beds and mattresses in the maternity ward,” Dr. Nyantaro said, while appealing to other organisations and well-wishers to support the hospital with additional mattresses and other medical supplies.

The Inspectorate of Government said the intervention reflects its broader role of identifying challenges affecting public service delivery while carrying out its constitutional mandate of fighting corruption, abuse of office, maladministration and misuse of public resources.

Through monitoring visits, the Inspectorate said it seeks to highlight service delivery gaps and encourage solutions that improve the quality of services received by citizens.
