Journalist and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) leader Andrew Mwenda has announced that the closure of Nation Media Group (NMG) Uganda outlets could soon come to an end following discussions with Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

In a post published on his X account on Sunday, Mwenda said he had held talks with Gen. Muhoozi and that the two, in their capacity as leaders of the Patriotic League of Uganda, had agreed that Daily Monitor and NTV Uganda would be reopened soon.

“I have just held discussions with Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba and we, as leaders of PLU, have agreed that we shall reopen both Daily Monitor and NTV soon. However, we shall first have discussions with the management of both sister companies. I will inform them when we can have this meeting,” Mwenda wrote.

The announcement comes hours after security forces shut down operations at Nation Media Group Uganda, taking NTV Uganda, Spark TV, Daily Monitor and other affiliated platforms off air following a directive issued by Gen. Muhoozi.

Earlier, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) said it had engaged stakeholders over the temporary interruption of NMG’s broadcasting services and urged the public to remain calm as consultations continued.

Mwenda’s statement is the clearest indication yet that negotiations are underway to restore the operations of the affected media houses, although no timeline has been provided for their reopening.

Discussions with Nation Media Group’s management are expected to determine the next steps before broadcasting and publication resume.
