Rakai- Uganda
Once a prominent figure in Rakai district, Robert Kambugu, who had defected from the National Unity Platform (NUP) party, now finds himself facing an unexpected turn of events.
Having initially served as the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Lwengo district, he was later transferred to Rakai, only to be met with an order to vacate his office with immediate effect.
Kambugu is being accused of his alleged involvement in fueling the friction and tensions between the Buganda and Kooki regions.
It is said that his endorsement of the Masaza Cup, a tournament organised by the Buganda Kingdom, despite Kooki’s objections, aggravated the already strained relationship.
Additionally, accusations have been made regarding Kambugu’s handling of community development funds and the alleged corrupt officials in the works and administration department which landed him in trouble.
The decisive blow came on June 12, 2023, when Kambugu received a letter that carried the weight of his professional downfall.
The missive, signed by Hajji Yunus Kakande, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the President, served as a summons back to the head office, where he was to face the consequences of his actions.
Pending disciplinary action, Kambugu was instructed to hand over his office to Sarah Kiyimba, the main RDC. With this abrupt turn of events, Kambugu’s future hangs in the balance.
However, the stage is set for a complex tale of political maneuvring, strained relationships, and allegations of wrongdoing.
As he prepares to leave behind the position he once held with authority, questions loom large regarding the circumstances that led to his downfall.
Some sources further believed that the strained working relationship between Kambugu and Sarah Kiyimba, his immediate boss, may have played a fateful role as well.
In a leaked conversation between Sarah Kiyimba and Godfrey Kimbugwe, the Kooki Cultural Institution’s Deputy Katikiro, it was revealed that efforts were being made to ensure Kambugu loses his position as an RDC and gets arrested later.
Kiyimba can be heard urging the Deputy Premier amicably resolve the disagreement between Kooki leadership and Kambugu, but Kimbugwe remains adamant, asserting that Kambugu crossed the line.
The institution, according to Kimbugwe, had already compiled a corruption report against him (Kambugu), which was handed over to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit for a thorough investigation.
Kambugu is currently not willing to discuss the situation, but sources indicate that he is residing in Nyendo town where he does not entertain guests at the moment.
But his supporters and some local residents are urging the anticorruption unit to thoroughly investigate the matter, as they believe the reports against Kambugu may be politically and culturally fabricated to remove him from Kooki territory.
Blocking Masaza
Authorities in Kooki have once again prohibited Buganda Kingdom’s match, marking the third time after a similar incident on July 2, 2022, when Kooki prevented a match between Kooki and Kabula from taking place.
Back in 2018, the police made an attempt to hinder the visit of Buganda Kingdom’s Prime Minister, Charles Peter Mayiga, to Kooki. The purpose of his visit was to promote coffee cultivation.
However, Kooki loyalists organised demonstrations to protest his visit, prompting higher state authorities to intervene.
