Two Lawyers Remanded Over UGX 917 Million Land Fraud Scheme

Suspects

Two advocates, Bob Mwanjuzi and Lawrence Kalamu, have been remanded to prison by the Buganda Chief Magistrates’ Court this afternoon over allegations of forgery, conspiracy to commit a felony, and obtaining money by false pretenses.

The pair appeared in court following their arraignment by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in coordination with the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP).

Prosecution alleges that on April 20, 2023, the accused, alongside others still at large, conspired to forge a lease agreement purporting that a deal had been signed between SEMA Holding Limited and Ephrata Investment Group Ltd.

The lease was linked to property at Plot 3A Lugogo By-Pass, which was intended for the development of the Blackzone Recreation Center.

Using the falsified document, Mwanjuzi and Kalamu allegedly deceived Kalpana Abe and her company, SEMA Holding Limited, into releasing UGX 917 million under the pretext that the funds were to be invested in the recreation center project managed by Ephrata Investment Group.

The magistrate ordered that the accused be remanded until August 13, 2025, as investigations continue.

The case underscores the growing concern over white-collar fraud and legal professionals implicated in financial crimes. Authorities have indicated that efforts are ongoing to apprehend additional suspects involved in the scheme.
