West Nile, Uganda. Ayivu East CPS is holding a 48-year-old peasant for the alleged murder of his wife. James Agunda, a resident of Obaru cell, Ombokolo ward killed 23-year-old Judith Chandiru, for denying him sex.
The gruesome incident occurred on March 1, 2024, leaving the community shocked as it was the first incident of its kind. Local authorities say the relationship had cracks and was marred by longstanding counter-accusations of infidelity.
The couple had been sharing a marital bed but devoid of any sexual relations, a consequence of the wife’s suspicions regarding her husband’s extramarital affairs.
The situation reached a boiling point on the fateful night, leading to a heated argument between Agunda and Chandiru. Following the altercation, the wife retreated to a separate mattress, only to be pursued by her enraged husband.
In a fit of anger, Agunda pounced on Chandiru, punching her several times around the chest and rib cage. The force of the blows proved fatal, as the victim collapsed on the floor and succumbed to her injuries.
After realising the gravity of his actions, the suspect voluntarily surrendered to the police, admitting his responsibility for the tragic incident.
However, police promptly responded to the scene, documenting the incident and conducting a thorough examination of the victim’s body. The authorities handed over the deceased to her relatives for burial, as investigations into the case proceeded.
This heartbreaking incident indicates the alarming trend of domestic violence, specifically murders within spousal relationships.
This further highlights the disturbing pattern of gruesome murders in domestic settings, particularly husbands resorting to violence against their wives over denied conjugal rights and suspicions of extramarital affairs.
According to Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police Spokesperson, such incidents indicate the importance of understanding and respecting the right to life of every individual within a relationship.
It is, however, imperative to stress that every spouse, partner, or lover is entitled to the fundamental right to life, and conflicts should be resolved through lawful means rather than resorting to violence.
“Denying conjugal rights or dealing with suspicions of infidelity should not lead to tragic consequences but instead be addressed through open communication, counselling, and legal avenues,” he said.
Sexpert Revelation
According to a sexpert we spoke to, different factors make men have higher sex drive than women and denying them sex may spark their fury.
She explains that some factors are biological and says that men, on average, may experience a higher level of sex drive due to biological factors, such as higher levels of testosterone. This, she added, can lead to a more pronounced desire for sexual activity, and when that desire is unfulfilled, it may cause frustration.
For many individuals, she noted, sex is not only a physical act but also a way to connect emotionally with a partner. The absence of sexual intimacy may be perceived as a lack of emotional connection, leading to feelings of frustration or dissatisfaction.
The sexpert further connected societal norms and expectations that often place a strong emphasis on male sexual prowess and satisfaction. Men, however, may feel pressure to conform to these expectations, and the perception of not meeting them can lead to frustration.
In her explanation, sex is an essential aspect of many romantic relationships, and a breakdown in communication regarding sexual needs and desires can contribute to frustration. In this case, when partners struggle to express their needs or understand each other’s expectations, it can lead to dissatisfaction.
While sex is often considered a stress-relieving activity, when individuals experience stress or pressure in other areas of their lives, a lack of sexual activity may exacerbate these feelings rather than provide the expected relief.
