MASAKA. Police in Greater Masaka is investigating circumstances under which the President of South Buganda Journalists’ Association-SOBUJA Ismael Ssozi Ssekimpi Lwazi was assaulted by a traffic police officer yesterday evening.
Ssozi who corresponds with Central Broadcasting Services-CBS, Buganda Kingdom’s radio station was admitted to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for treatment against the severe injuries sustained.
The Insight Post has managed to speak Sssozi who claims that had gone to check on his vehicle which had been involved in an accident at Kabale- Bugonzi along Kampala- Masaka road before he was attacked by the officers accusing him for getting close to the scene.
“Victor Tumwebaze the OC Traffic of Kalungu district instead of cautioning me getting close to the scene, he only started beating me until I collapsed,” Ssozi recalls.
One of the police officers at Lukaya who preferred anonymity to speak to us notes that many police officers have personal grudges with Ssozi due to the many stories he airs at CBS that have resulted into dismissal and demotion of officers.
Although Tumwebaze has declined to say anything about what happened, Vienne Birungi the OC Lukaya Police Station says Police will investigate and pin the culprits without fail.
Meanwhile, journalists in Masaka have threatened to take the matter to court challenging police brutality against journalists.
