The war between the M23 rebels and the Congolese government forces is raging in North Kivu province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Tensions have reached a boiling point after a tragic bomb blast killed three children in Mugunga district, in the West of Goma city.
The incident occurred as fierce fighting continues between the M23 rebels and the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC), with battles intensifying along the Sake-Minova road.
Residents of Mugunga, particularly those displaced by the conflict and living in Lushagala camp, are caught in the crossfire.
Dedesi Mitima, a resident, expressed fear and grief over the loss of young lives in the blast, which has added to the chaos and instability in the region.
The M23 rebels, emboldened by recent clashes, are predicting a full-scale war, as the conflict shows no signs of slowing down.
army (FARDC) and its allies launched heavy artillery attacks on several towns in the North Kivu province.
According to Kanyuka, these mortar bombs hit populated areas, including Bweremana and Ndumba, and even landed in the Chemin du Ciel cemetery in Virunga National Park.
The attacks reportedly resulted in the deaths of several individuals, including a 29-year-old woman named Agnes Zaninka, and injuries to others like Elie Hitimana.
The rebels also claimed that the FARDC and its coalition stole 50 cows from residents.
Kanyuka warned that these escalating attacks could lead to a larger conflict, despite ongoing peace efforts by regional and international leaders.
On Friday, the FARDC confirmed that the children who died were hit by a mortar bomb while collecting firewood, which they accidentally tampered with.
The renewed fighting between the M23 rebels and the Congolese government forces has intensified tensions and caused more displacement of civilians.
The M23 conflict, which began in March 2022, has resulted in significant territorial control by the rebels, with ongoing accusations against Rwanda for supporting them—allegations that both Rwanda and the M23 deny.
