Six students from Bishop Senior Secondary School in Mukono have been arrested and detained at Mukono Central Police Station for allegedly setting a school dormitory on fire.
The suspects reportedly led a violent strike at the school about a week ago, during which the dormitory was torched.
The motive behind the unrest remains unclear, as neither the school administration nor police have revealed the grievances that triggered the incident.
According to sources at the school, the administration allowed the students to sit for their final Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations before handing them over to authorities to avoid disrupting their national exams.
Following the conclusion of exams, the students were escorted to police, where they are currently being held.
Police have opened a case of arson, and investigations are underway before prosecution commences.
When contacted for comment, the head teacher, Mr. Robert Kyakulaga, declined to provide details, saying he would issue an official statement later.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango said the case will be handled in accordance with the law, and appropriate charges will be preferred once inquiries are complete.
