The police in Lwengo district are detaining a man suspected to be behind the gruesome murder of a 14-year-old girl.
Monica Namusanya had disappeared from her parents’ home in Ndegeya village, Kisekka sub-county on January 17, 2012.
Her headless body was found in a swamp in the neigbhouring village of Kyamaganda on Wednesday last week.
The police say they have been hunting for suspects since the incident until when new clues led them to Jimmy Ssekajjugo who is currently the key suspect in the Namusanya’s death.
Ssekajjugo was pinned by his own family members and several residents promoting his arrest.
Last week, a mob stormed Ssekajjugo’s home and destroyed a three-acre banana plantation accusing him of witchcraft and alleged human sacrifice.
The attack forced him into hiding where police picked him yesterday to aid the ongoing investigation.
ASP Muhammad Nsubuga, the Masaka Region Police spokesperson, has confirmed the arrest saying Ssekajjugo is being detained at Mbiriizi Police Station as they looking for more suspects.
In the meantime, he says, they are working with the Resident State Attorney (RSA) for guidance and technical advice on how to proceed with the case.
According to Nsubuga, they are still searching for the deceased’s missing head and more witnesses to get on top of the investigations. Ssekajjugo has maintained his innocence since the incident.
Ssekajjugo says his brother David Ssekajjugo is using their longstanding differences to pin him to Namusanya’s death.
