On Sunday evening, police in the Kiira region confirmed the arrest of three National Unity Platform (NUP) mobilizers for organizing an illegal assembly at the Buyengo town council grounds in Jinja district.
The detained suspects, currently held at Kakira Central Police Station, are Stephen Ochen, Fred Lutaaya, and Bashiru Kabaseka.
The trio allegedly organised a NUP grassroots mobilizers’ football gala at Buyengo town council playgrounds without notifying police authorities to assess the general security situation of the area.
According to Kabaseka, the gala’s organising committee chairperson, they coordinated with local leaders and the owners of the playgrounds following the Constitutional Court ruling disempowering the Public Management Act.
Kabaseka, currently under police detention, expressed astonishment at police personnel forcibly dispersing spectators from the playground.

He claimed that police fired live ammunition into the air before effecting their arrest. James Mubi, the Kiira regional police spokesperson, stated that the football gala had turned rowdy, with revellers throwing stones at police personnel.
Mubi accused the suspects of utilizing their Tata lorry registration number UPF 583 and motorcycle UDM 418V to transport their “chaotic supporters,” causing a traffic standstill in neighbouring trading centres.
The trio will be charged with obstructing police officers on lawful duty and drunken driving, as stated by Mubi.
