The town council and sub-county elections in Lwengo district have been dominated by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidates who have won several positions.
In Lwengo Town Council, the race was between the Joseph Lubega Bazoonoona of NRM and Hajji Nasiri Muniru the incumbent.
However, Bazoonoona won the most competitive race after scoring 1,798 while Muniru scored 1,610. Bazoonoona was chairperson for Lwengo Rural sub-county before he chose to contest for the town council post.
He said the 17 villages that make up the town council still have challenges of electricity access and lack of street lights, poor drainage, access to clean and safe water across the town council.
Bazoonoona attributed his victory to support of people from different political parties saying that he is determined to do his best to extend the necessary services to all residents.
He further appealed to the NRM leadership to embark on addressing regional problems since every part has its own challenges.
In Kinoni town council, NUP’s Kibuuka Kizito Mbaga emerged winner with 1,457 votes. NRM’s George Lutwama scored 1,186 votes.
Mbaga said he is excited to be the first town council chairperson for Kinoni adding that he will first look at improving sanitation in the town council, lobby for the people and to create more businesses to improve on the livelihoods of the deprived people.
He pledged to work with civil servants and politicians who lost in the race saying that their ideas are important in the development of Kinoni town council.
However, NUP’s Aloysius Kibira Muwonge has been declared winner in the Kingo sub-county chairperson race. Muwonge scored 2,443 and NRM’s Moses Musisi 791.
According to Muwonge, there have been several challenges in the race including harassment by his opponent’s camp, voter bribery among others.
He further pledged to focus on community participation so as to have effected service delivery in Kingo sub-county
In Kissekka sub-county, NUP’s Joseph Bugembe, emerged winner with 2,920 votes and NRM’s Charles Kiyimba 2,455. Ndagwe sub-county was won by NRM’s Hussein Mwesigwa who scored 2,574 and NUP’s Julius Mwesigwa 1,259 votes. In the meantime, vote counting is still on.
