The Electoral Commission (EC) in Kalangala District has completed key preparations for the upcoming Woman Member of Parliament by-election slated for June 24, 2026.
The by-election follows the death of former Woman MP-elect Hellen Nakimuli, who passed away while undergoing surgery shortly after winning the 2026 general elections.
Kalangala District Returning Officer Ronald Agaba confirmed that the voter register display exercise has been successfully concluded after running for 10 days across the district.
Speaking at the EC offices in Kizzi Village, Kalangala Town Council, Agaba announced that nomination of candidates will take place over two days, starting today Wednesday, June 10, and Thursday, June 11, between 9:00am and 5:00pm at the district headquarters main hall.
Agaba cautioned aspirants against arriving at the nomination venue with crowds of supporters or vehicle processions, saying the Commission intends to maintain order during the exercise.
According to the EC guidelines, each aspirant will only be permitted to access the venue with a maximum of two vehicles carrying not more than 10 people.
He explained that every candidate must present a proposer and seconder, both of whom must be registered voters within the constituency.
The returning officer further outlined other nomination requirements, including proof of payment of the Shs3 million nomination fee, possession of at least an Advanced Level certificate, Ugandan citizenship, and mental soundness.
Political attention in the island district is currently centered on the anticipated battle among the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), opposition National Unity Platform (NUP), and Independent candidate, Hellen Flavia Nagawa, all expressing optimism about securing victory.
So far, four aspirants have shown interest in the race, pending successful nomination and clearance by the Electoral Commission.
The EC is expected to publish the final list of duly nominated candidates after the exercise concludes.
