Rampant fires have occurred in Buvuma islands over the years, and residents are now taking smart steps to address the recurring threat by relocating fuel storage and vending activities away from their homes.
This measure, aimed at minimising fire risks, follows a series of devastating incidents that have destroyed homes and businesses.
The decision was reached over the weekend after a fire ravaged Lyabaana Island, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Previous fires have also gutted residential camps in Bweema, Luwero, and Lubya islands, highlighting the urgent need for action.
Traditionally, fuel dealers on the islands stored petrol in their homes, where they also cooked and resided.
This practice significantly increased the likelihood of fires. Under the new resolution, all petrol dealers will operate from designated, secure locations.
Fishermen requiring fuel for their journeys will now collect it from these centralised points and return unused fuel and equipment, such as boat engines, to the guarded facilities for safekeeping.
Bashir Ssenfuma, Chairperson of Lyabaana Island Sub-county, believes this initiative will significantly reduce fire incidents.
He noted that many previous fires, including the recent one on Lyabaana, were caused by charcoal stoves placed near stored fuel.
Strong winds often exacerbated the situation, quickly spreading the flames.

“We have been fortunate that no lives have been lost, but the damage to property has been immense. To enhance safety, armed police officers will now be deployed to guard the new fuel centers,” Ssenfuma stated.
Fred Isingoma, the Assistant Resident District Commissioner, welcomed the initiative and pledged to expand it to other islands in the district.
“This resolution is a step in the right direction and could prevent similar disasters elsewhere,” he remarked.
In the aftermath of the Lyabaana fire, relief efforts have been coordinated to support affected families.
The Office of the Prime Minister and the Uganda Red Cross Society have provided essential supplies, including food, tarpaulins, solar lamps, cups, plates, blankets, and jerrycans.

The aid was delivered by Edgar Ngonzi, a Red Cross official overseeing the Greater Mukono area, alongside District Woman MP Suzan Nakaziba and MP Robert Migadde Ndugwa.
This proactive approach by Buvuma authorities not only aims to safeguard lives and property but also serves as a model for other communities grappling with similar challenges.
