The Special Forces Command (SFC) has reportedly detained former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago after security operatives allegedly entered his Wakaliga residence on Monday morning.
Earlier, Lukwago revealed that his home had been surrounded by security personnel as he prepared to take his children to school. According to him, several vehicles, including the infamous “drone” minibuses, were stationed outside the property, while both uniformed and plainclothes officers were deployed around the area.
“I woke up to find two drones parked outside my gate, with people in civilian clothes and military uniforms spread around the premises. At the moment, I cannot leave my home,” Lukwago said.
He further noted that the officers had not communicated the purpose of their presence.
“I have not been informed why they are here or what they want. We have not spoken to them, and they have not spoken to us,” he added.
Witnesses at the scene reported seeing two minibuses and a police patrol vehicle carrying SFC personnel approach the residence before some officers entered the compound.
The development comes against the backdrop of the ongoing treason and national security case involving Dr. Kizza Besigye and Hajji Obeid Lutale, where Lukwago is serving as the lead defence lawyer.
Recently, members of the defence team, including Lukwago and Martha Karua, boycotted an evidence-review exercise, citing restrictions imposed on them at Luzira Upper Prison. The accused persons have also declined to physically appear in court proceedings.
The security operation at Lukwago’s residence coincides with efforts by his legal team to serve court documents on Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Last Thursday, Justice Emmanuel Baguma directed Gen. Muhoozi to file a response within seven days to a petition lodged by Besigye and Lutale over alleged threats made on social media.
Speaking on Friday, Lukwago confirmed that the Attorney General had already been served with the court documents. However, he said Gen. Muhoozi, Col. Peter Ahimbisibwe and Lt. Col. Ephraim Byaruhanga had not yet been formally served.
The timing of the deployment has fueled speculation about whether it is connected to the ongoing legal battles or signals further action against the veteran politician and lawyer.
By press time, neither the Uganda Police Force nor the Uganda People’s Defence Forces had issued an official explanation regarding the operation.
More details will follow as they emerge.
