A 25-year-old teacher at Mother’s Pride Nursery and Primary School in Gulama Village, Goma Division, Mukono Municipality, has been remanded to Luzira Prison until July 28 after appearing before the Mukono Grade One Magistrate’s Court on a charge of aggravated defilement involving a 16-year-old pupil.
Nathan Odeke, a Primary Six Science teacher at the school, appeared before Grade One Magistrate Praise Ahurira on Friday. He is accused of committing the offence on two separate occasions.
According to the prosecution, the first alleged incident occurred in May 2026, while the second is said to have taken place on July 10, 2026, at the school premises.
Court heard that during the second alleged incident, most teachers and pupils had travelled to Tororo District to attend the head teacher’s introduction ceremony.
The prosecution alleges that Odeke lured the pupil to a Primary Six classroom, where the offence was allegedly committed. The incident was reportedly interrupted after another pupil noticed what was happening and alerted other teachers, who reported the matter to police.
State prosecutor Babra Anguzu informed the court that investigations had been completed and requested that the case be adjourned for mention.
Magistrate Ahurira remanded Odeke to Luzira Prison until July 28, noting that aggravated defilement is an offence that can only be tried by the High Court. She informed the accused that he has the right to apply for bail before the High Court.
Odeke remains in custody pending further proceedings.
The case has renewed concerns about the safety and protection of learners in schools, with child rights advocates calling for stronger safeguarding measures, thorough vetting of school staff and enhanced supervision to protect children from abuse.
Under Ugandan law, aggravated defilement is a grave offence that attracts severe penalties upon conviction.
