Kawempe North MP Latif Sebaggala has suspended his Mayoral bid, days after he was endorsed by the National Unity Platform for the race.
He said that the decision was based on the need for a stronger opposition as the country heads for the 2021 general election.
Sebaggala held a press conference this afternoon at his home in Kawempe and declared that he was pulling out of the race to reduce on the congestion of opposition candidates which gives NRM an upper hand in the race.
So far, the opposition candidates who have announced their interest in the seat include, the incumbent Erias Lukwago, Joseph Mayanja, also known as Jose Chameleone, and the current Kampala Woman MP Nabilah Naggayi Sempala. Earlier, Former Kampala Mayor Al Hajji Nasser Ntege Ssebagala had also indicated that the intended to contest for the same seat.
On the other hand, the ruling national resistance movement -NRM party has endorsed Daniel Kazibwe, also known as Ragga Dee, as its candidate for the same race.
Sebaggala says that it is for this reason that he saw a need to decongest the list of opposition candidates on that crucial post so that the NRM does not take advantage and reclaim full control of the country’s capital city.
Sebaggala says he will find time in the due course to declare his next move, since he had already moved out of the Parliamentary race for Kawempe North.
He, however, didn’t express support for any of the remaining candidates and said his political party will think of the best response on that question.
