Police have summoned Mukono district top officials to answer allegations of corruption and abuse of office.
The investigation centres on Elizabeth Namanda, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and eight other officials, who are expected to report to the Regional Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) Headquarters at Kampala Metropolitan East on Jinja Road, starting today.
Others include the District Internal Auditor, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), and members of the District Executive Committee
This move is part of a broader crackdown on corruption, aiming to hold public officials accountable and ensure transparency within the district administration.
The summons was triggered by a complaint from Samuel Odongo, the district councillor representing Nama sub-county.
Odongo highlighted various corruption issues that have gone unchecked for too long.
According to the police file, Namanda and her co-accused are the main suspects in these investigations.
Odongo alleges that Namanda distributed UGX520,000 among 43 councillors to secure approval for a district budget. However, the source of this money remains unknown.
“Such an amount could support the district’s health system,” Odongo said. “For instance, at the general hospital, patients are charged 1,000 shillings for an injection. This money could be used to bridge that gap.”
Other issues include the failure to remit 75% of the property tax collected by the town council and 25% of revenue from other lower local governments.
The accused are all expected to provide statements regarding these funds.
Interestingly, there are counter-accusations and unfolding drama in this matter.
Unverified reports indicate that the CAO, Namanda, has filed a countercase against Councillor Odongo for cyberbullying at Kampala Metropolitan Police-West.
However, political analysts and police detectives have seen this as an attempt to scare the petitioner and frustrate the ongoing investigations.
It is also unclear why Namanda chose KMP West, as Mukono District falls under KMP East’s jurisdiction.
However, the residents are watching closely, hoping that justice will be served. They also hope transparency and accountability will prevail in their local government.
