Six people have shown interest in contesting for the Kawempe North Parliamentary seat on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket.
The Kawempe North seat became vacant following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya.
On Wednesday, the NUP Election Management Committee (EMC), called upon party members who are qualified and willing, to express interest in carrying the party flag for the position of Member of Parliament for Kawempe North Division, and Councilor LCIII for Kazo-Angola Ward.
Among those who have expressed interest are, Mathias Mulumba, also known as Kikumi Kya Doola, the LCI chairman of Corner Zone in Kazo-Angola Parish.
Mulumba is also an administrative officer at Namanve Industrial Park. He joined NUP in 2020
Mulumba revealed that he was previously a member of the Democratic Party (DP) and even contested for the parliamentary seat in 2021 under the DP ticket.
Others are Umar Magala, a qualified teacher, Muhammad Luwemba, the late Ssegirinya’s aide, Luyimbaazi Nalukoola, a lawyer, Salim Serunkuuma, who lost to Ssegirinya and Saul Kulya.
According to the by-election programme issued by the Electoral Commission Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, the update of the National Voters’ Register for Kawempe North started on January 27th and ends today.
The Display of the Voters’ Register at polling stations in Kawempe North will be conducted from 10th to 19th February, and later nomination of candidates at the Office of the Returning Officer from 26th to 27th February 2025.
The campaign period is scheduled to start on 28th February to 11th March and the issuance of the Voting Location Slips (VLS) will also happen from 28th February to 13th March.
