Joint Rotary Clubs Donate Obstetric Mattresses to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital

The Rotary Clubs of Masaka, Kyotera, Nalumunye, and Kyengera have jointly donated obstetric mattresses to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital to improve comfort and support for mothers during childbirth.

The donation, comprising 30 mattresses, was delivered by the four Rotary Club presidents, led by Rotarian Deborah Komugisha Kakande, the “President of Presidents” under Rotary District 9214 and current president of the Rotary Club of Nalumunye.

Rotarian Komugisha explained that the clubs decided to extend their focus beyond Water and Sanitation Health (WASH) to include Maternal and Child Health, noting that hospitals and health centers face numerous challenges.

“Mothers need to sleep on comfortable mattresses after childbirth. When the Rotary Club of Masaka approached Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, they highlighted a shortage of obstetric mattresses. That is why we have delivered this consignment of 30 mattresses,” she said.

Rotarian Madrine Namayengo, president of the Rotary Club of Masaka, said the project targets a total of 100 mattresses, given the high demand at Masaka Regional Referral Hospital, which serves mothers from across nine districts and Masaka City.

“This is not our first donation here. We have previously provided equipment, but after realizing the urgent need for better maternity support, we joined forces with other clubs to deliver this contribution,” Namayengo added.

Hospital Director Dr. James Justice Erima applauded the Rotary Clubs for the initiative and challenged leaders driving “multi-billion shilling cars” to also support health facilities in their areas.

Rotarian Mary Mukasa Kalyango, president of the Rotary Club of Kyengera, and Anthony Lubega, vice president of the Rotary Club of Kyotera, emphasized that Rotary provides a platform to serve communities and urged more people to join efforts that bridge service delivery gaps where government may not act immediately.

Globally, Rotary is a network of 1.2 million neighbors, friends, leaders, and problem-solvers committed to uniting and taking action to create lasting change across communities and the world.
