The opposition leadership in Parliament has unveiled new committee and leadership assignments following internal consultations, with Leader of the Opposition (LoP) Joel Ssenyonyi retaining his position, while significant changes have been made to key oversight and accountability roles.
Ssenyonyi will continue to steer the opposition caucus in Parliament, maintaining continuity in leadership as the group reorganises its structure for the new parliamentary engagements.
In the reshuffle, John Baptist Nambeshe has been appointed as a commissioner, while Paul Mwiru, who also previously contested for the speakership, has been named Chief Whip.
The new appointments also reflect a broader distribution of committee responsibilities aimed at strengthening the opposition’s legislative and oversight role.
In the Local Government Committee, Kampala Woman MP Betty Nambooze has been appointed Chairperson, deputised by Abed Nasser Mudyobole.
For the Government Assurances Committee, also known as “Gavumenti Assurance Committee,” the leadership will be headed by Francis Zaake, with Anna Ebaju Adeke serving as Vice Chairperson.
The Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) will be chaired by Nkunyingi Muwadda, with George Musisi appointed as Vice Chairperson.
Meanwhile, the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) will be led by Nsamba Patrick, deputised by Sarah Lwansasula.
In the opposition whip structure, Paul Mwiru takes on the role of Chief Whip, with Harriet Nakwede serving as Deputy Chief Whip.
The opposition commissioners will include John Baptist Nambeshe, alongside other senior members tasked with coordinating internal parliamentary strategy and engagement.
The latest appointments are expected to shape how the opposition executes its oversight mandate, particularly in holding government accountable through parliamentary committees and plenary debates.
