UPDF Holds Two Staff Members Attached to Anita Among in Corruption Investigation

‎‎Zipporah Akol, the longtime personal assistant and close political ally of former Speaker of Parliament Annet Anita Among, came into the spotlight on Friday after security operatives conducted a three-hour search at her residence in Bukedea District as part of an ongoing corruption probe linked to the former Speaker.

The operation, involving personnel from the Army, the Police Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), and the Internal Security Organisation (ISO), was carried out at Akol’s home in Obur Ngagor Village, Kolir Sub-county.

Akol, who is also Among’s sister, has for years been regarded as one of the key mobilisers behind Among’s political activities in Bukedea District.

She has frequently been at the centre of the former Speaker’s political operations and recently attracted public attention after filing court petitions aimed at blocking several aspirants from contesting against Among for the Bukedea District Woman Member of Parliament seat.

Friday’s search followed earlier visits by investigators to Among’s home in Aputput Village, Ae-rere Parish, Kamutur Sub-county, as well as her mother’s residence in Apopong Village, Kolir Sub-county.

The coordinated operations are part of broader investigations into alleged corruption and financial impropriety linked to Among during her tenure as Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

When security personnel arrived at Akol’s residence, they were accompanied by Among’s legal team led by Caleb Alaka of Alaka and Company Advocates.

Before the search commenced, investigators and lawyers reportedly signed official documentation authorising the operation.

Family members watched helplessly as security officers combed through the compound and surrounding premises.

Police Evidence Response Team vehicles were later seen leaving the home carrying sealed items believed to be exhibits recovered during the search.

Attempts to obtain comments from family members were unsuccessful, with relatives saying they had been instructed not to speak publicly about the matter.

“We have no authority to talk about anything but to watch what is going on here. If you want a word, please ask the family head or the family lawyer,” one family member said.

Akol previously made headlines in May 2025 after filing a lawsuit against three aspiring candidates seeking to challenge Among for the Bukedea Woman MP seat ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Through M/S Alaka & Co. Advocates and Ochieng Associated Advocates and Solicitors, Akol petitioned the Kampala High Court seeking to block the nomination of the aspirants on grounds that they were allegedly not registered voters in Bukedea District.

The case, registered as Cause Number 0198 of 2025, targeted Hellen Akol Odeke, Norma Susan Otai of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and Mercy Marion Alupo of the National Unity Platform (NUP).

The Electoral Commission was also named as a respondent for allegedly failing to implement decisions by local parish tribunals that recommended the removal of the aspirants from the voters’ register.

One of the affected aspirants, Norma Susan Otai, later challenged Akol’s petition in the Civil Division of the High Court in Kampala, but the case was dismissed in January 2026.

By Friday evening, the search at Akol’s residence was still ongoing, with reports indicating that investigators could extend operations to the homes of other close associates of Among in Bukedea District.
