World over, politicians making promises they don’t keep is a tale as old as politics itself.
Also in Uganda, several politicians at different levels make bold campaign pledges only to fall short on delivery.
On the contrary, in Mukono South Constituency, a young politician, Richard Kateregga Mivule is creating a difference within the electorate.
Kateregga, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) stalwart has proved to walk the talk through empowering minority community groups, especially women and youths.
He spends most of his time within the community interacting with locals to understand their challenges, as a graduate of social work and social administration, he creates solutions within the social and economic spheres.
Kateregga dreams of representing this constituency in the parliament but he believes people represented must be healthy and economically transformative.
“In several villages within my constituency, people have whatever it takes to live in better standards. The greatest challenge I have discovered is a lack of financial literacy to understand and effectively use financial skills such as financial management, budgeting, and investing to create a difference in life.” Kateregga says.
I have encouraged residents to create community groups for development where I have initiated them into different projects, entrepreneurship skills, and pieces of training in financial literacy, and others empowered with capital.
Since the constituency is surrounded by water, Kateregga thought about the fishing community’s hygiene, in collaboration with different partners, he has provided tables, buckets, containers, umbrellas, and gumboots to ensure a clean environment.
Women picked much interest in poultry and the majority started enjoying the fruits of the project.
Sylvia Nakigudde from Katosi got 1.25 million as profits from the poultry project. Also, Madinah Nabwami from Mpunge has saved a clean profit of 3 million from the 700 birds she managed.
Several other economic programs have been established in the area through Kateregga’s intellect, lobbying skills, and well wishes.
Once Kateregga continues to pursue his political dream, he is likely to compete for the NRM card with other aspirants such as Johnson Muyanja Ssenyonga before joining the general campaigns for the position of MP, Mukono South County as a flag bearer.
For the general race, Kateregga is expected to compete with the incumbent, Fred Kayondo (DP), Merhab Nalumu, and Wilson Male (NUP).
