A senior official in the Uganda Revenue Authority (Uganda Revenue Authority) is under investigation following a Sunday night shooting incident that left two civilians injured along the Kampala–Jinja Highway in Mukono Town.
The incident occurred on April 26, 2026 at around 9:00 PM. According to preliminary findings and eyewitness accounts, Godson Mwesigye, a Commissioner in URA’s enforcement unit, was travelling in a silver Toyota Fortuner (UA 20241AA) accompanied by armed soldiers attached to enforcement operations when he allegedly ordered the occupants of a Toyota Vista (UBP 571G) to be shot at.
The vehicle was reportedly sprayed with bullets, with its tyres damaged, and two occupants identified as Denis Ebu and Joseph Tamale sustained serious injuries.
The victims, both residents of Mutungo in Kampala, were rushed to Nsambya Hospital (Nsambya Hospital), where earlier reports indicated they were in critical condition. However, a police statement later clarified that Tamale Joseph had been treated and discharged and is expected to record a formal statement with police.
The Uganda Police Force (Uganda Police Force) confirmed that a case of attempted murder has been opened under SD Reference 66/26/04/2026, noting that the incident involved occupants of vehicles travelling in the same direction, including enforcement officers.
Police said investigations are ongoing in collaboration with the Uganda Revenue Authority (Uganda Revenue Authority) to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.
Security sources said UPDF soldiers attached to the enforcement team were arrested at the scene, while Commissioner Mwesigye reportedly fled and remains at large. The Uganda People’s Defence Force (Uganda People’s Defence Force) has not yet issued a detailed statement on the involvement of its personnel.
Investigators are also examining allegations that Mwesigye justified the shooting by claiming the victims were suspected smugglers, although emerging information reportedly contradicts this account, suggesting the victims had travelled to Jinja for a weekend outing and were returning to Kampala at the time of the incident.
Police and URA officials have so far declined to provide further comment beyond the official statement, citing ongoing investigations.
