Two three-month-old female infants have died after a fire swept through a wooden settlement at Kitosi Landing Site in Lwomolo Parish, Koome Sub-county, Mukono District.
The fire broke out at about 5pm on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, destroying approximately 12 houses and property belonging to residents.
According to police, the two infants were inside a room that had been secured with a padlock when the fire started, leaving residents unable to gain access and rescue them.
Police officers who responded to the incident later recovered the bodies of the two children from the burnt structure.
Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Public Relations Officer Luke Owoyesigyire said investigations had been launched to establish the circumstances that led to the deaths and determine the cause of the fire.
Police are also assessing the extent of the destruction and identifying other residents who may have lost property in the blaze.
No arrests had been made by the time of reporting.
Owoyesigyire urged parents and guardians to avoid leaving children unattended, particularly in situations where they could become trapped during emergencies.
He also called on residents living in wooden structures to take greater precautions against fires by keeping flammable materials away from sources of heat and fire and ensuring that rooms have accessible emergency exits.
Police said they would continue sensitising communities on fire prevention and safety measures to reduce the risk of similar incidents.
