In a commendable initiative aimed at promoting girls’ education and preventing premature pregnancies, the Rotary Club of Sonde has launched a campaign to provide menstrual pads to girls in need.
The charitable effort occurred at Jinja Misidye Church of Uganda Primary School in Goma division, Mukono where Rotary Club members distributed menstrual pads to girls from Primary four to Primary six.
The primary objectives were not only to equip the girls with necessary hygiene resources but also to educate them on managing menstrual challenges.
Additionally, the campaign aimed to enlighten boys on the importance of supporting their sisters during these times and discourage gender-based violence.
Sarah Mafabi, the Senior Woman Teacher at the school, highlighted the numerous challenges the girls face, leading some to drop out. She expressed gratitude for the assistance, noting that girls often endure bullying from boys, particularly during their menstrual periods.
Several students shared their difficulties, stressing financial constraints preventing their parents from providing necessary supplies.
Some resorted to seeking help from men, leading to unwanted pregnancies and subsequent school dropouts. Boys, appreciative of the Rotary Club of Sonde’s intervention, pledged to support their sisters.
Nancy Obola, the program lead, shed light on the alarming lack of pads, soap, and essential items for the pupils during menstruation. The students revealed their hesitancy to discuss these issues with their parents, citing fear and bullying from boys.
According to Obola, the annual educational initiative is not only designed to address menstrual challenges but also to combat domestic violence. She urged parents to engage with their children and provide support during this crucial period.
The Rotary Club of Sonde’s impactful donation underscores their commitment to fostering education, gender equality, and community well-being.
