Seven senior officials attached to the Parliament of Uganda have been arrested by the Inspectorate of Government over alleged corruption and are expected to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court today.
In a statement released on Thursday, the Inspectorate of Government (IGG) said the officials were arrested following investigations into alleged corruption-related offences. However, the Inspectorate did not immediately disclose the specific charges they are expected to face.
Those arrested include Chris Obore, the Director of Communications at Parliament, Daniel Adilo, Director of Human Resource, Leonard Okema, Executive Secretary in the Office of the Speaker, Rajab Kaaya Ssemalulu, Principal Research Officer, Emmanuel Emuron Okwi, Principal Protocol Officer, Vincent Otebata, Capacity Development Officer, and Methods Murebe, the Chief Executive Officer of the Uganda Parliamentary Cooperative Savings and Credit Society Ltd (SACCO).
The Inspectorate said all seven suspects will be arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court, where they are expected to answer charges arising from the investigations.
The arrests mark one of the latest anti-corruption actions targeting senior public officials and come amid sustained efforts by the Inspectorate of Government to crack down on corruption and abuse of public office.
By the time of filing this report, Parliament had not issued an official statement regarding the arrests, and details of the alleged offences remained limited pending the court proceedings.
The Anti-Corruption Court is expected to formally read the charges against the suspects during their appearance, after which the court will determine the next course of action in the case.
