Authorities in Rakai District have launched a sensitisation campaign on lightning safety following a fatal strike that killed a man and a cow during a heavy storm.
The tragedy in Kizira village, Kagamba Parish, Byakabanda Sub-County, saw 37-year-old Experito Mugera lose his life while collecting rainwater.
The incident, which left the community in shock, has renewed concerns over the growing risk of lightning strikes, particularly in rural areas.
In response, local leaders and emergency officials are educating residents on precautionary measures, urging them to stay indoors during storms and avoid open spaces, water bodies, and metallic objects that could attract lightning.
Husein Katurebe, the village chairperson, emphasized the importance of awareness, stating that many people underestimate the dangers of lightning.
“We are encouraging everyone to take shelter and follow safety guidelines to prevent further tragedies, ” he explained.
Uganda, particularly the central and western regions, experiences one of the highest lightning frequencies in the world, with rural communities being the most vulnerable due to inadequate protective infrastructure.
As heavy rains continue across the country, authorities are calling for increased investment in lightning arrestors and public education campaigns to prevent further loss of life.
