Police in Mubende Municipality have intercepted four slaughtered dog carcasses that were allegedly being transported for distribution to roadside meat vendors along the Kampala–Mubende–Fort Portal highway.
The seizure was made in the early hours of Saturday morning during a routine patrol when officers stopped a motorcycle carrying a polythene bag and two passengers who reportedly failed to comply with a police checkpoint order to stop.
According to the police, the suspects attempted to flee, prompting a pursuit that ended in their arrest. A search conducted by Police Constable Paul Nkugwa and other officers later revealed the presence of four dog carcasses concealed in the bag.
Upon interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted that they were delivering the meat to roadside vendors in Mubende Municipality, where it was reportedly being supplied to unsuspecting consumers as roasted goat meat.
Police further stated that the suspects claimed they had been engaging in the practice regularly, trapping stray dogs from surrounding villages, slaughtering them, and selling the meat to traders operating in roadside food stalls.
The Kampala–Mubende–Fort Portal highway is known for its busy roadside meat markets, where travellers frequently stop to purchase roasted chicken and goat meat.
Authorities say the suspects remain in custody as investigations continue to identify possible accomplices involved in the alleged illegal meat supply network.
They are being held on charges related to cruelty to animals and injuring animals, offences prohibited under Uganda’s legal framework, including provisions of the Penal Code Act, which criminalises the unlawful killing or maiming of animals capable of being stolen.
Police have warned against the slaughter and sale of uninspected meat, stressing that such practices pose serious public health and safety risks to consumers.
