Police in Naggalama division, Nakifuma town council, in Mukono district have rescued 51 people conned by Aim Global Alliance with job promises.
The scam was being masterminded by Zephania Kasule and Evelyn Nantima, who have since been arrested.
Police swung into action after receiving numerous calls from parents and local leaders that children had been taken by Aim Global Alliance, promising them jobs but had turned them into hawkers on top of forcing them to call their parents to pay 1.5 million shillings for product purchases.
Kasule explained to the police that each of the recruits paid 150,000 shillings for registration and job consideration, which amounts to 7.6 million shillings.
“We also told them to call their parents or relatives to send them 1.5 million shillings to buy products which they will sell and get more money,” Kasule said.
It is alleged that more than 10 of the victims had already paid them 1.5 million shillings which translates to more than 20 million shillings already conned by the culprits.
Nantima said they had promised their victims to earn a million shillings per month once their clientele grows.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala metropolitan police spokesperson, said the operation was done in different areas of Kalagi, including Kakola village, Kyabakadde parish, Kyampisi sub-county, Mukono district.
“We found three males and 11 females sleeping in one room at Kakola village, Kyabakadde parish, Kyampisi sub-county.
We also found 10 males and 10 females sleeping in one room at Kalagi village, Naggalama A ward, Nakifuma Naggalama town council, in Mukono district,” Owoyesigyire said.
Detectives have established that Kasule and Nantima would pick the victims’ phones and start recruiting their friends. In addition, they would themselves call the relatives of the victims, demanding that they pay 1.5 million shillings to buy their products, which they will sell and get more money.
“We have established that they always promise victims that in the future they will reach a time when they will be earning at least one million shillings, depending on the people you have recruited and the sales made,” Owoyesigyire added.
The other 14 victims were collected from Bbosa village, Kyabakadde parish, and they were also staying in a single room.
Kasule and Nantima Evelyn, who have been recruiting and conning the victims, are currently detained at Naggalama.
