The National Unity Platform (NUP) registrars and mobilisers in Mukono Municipality are having a hard time locating suitable venues to update the party register.
Just last month, the party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu alias Bobi Wine initiated a countrywide membership registration campaign to enroll new supporters into the party database.
However, the party registrars in Mukono Municipality, have confirmed failure to secure appropriate venues for people to update the register or officially join the party.
Initially, the party had an office in Nabuti cell, house at the area Member of Parliament, Betty Nambooze Bakireke’s building. Unfortunately, this space has recently been converted into parking lot.
The registrars further express concern that the absence of established locations or venues makes it difficult for them to effectively conduct the exercise, despite trying door-to-door registration of members.
In a joint meeting held on Friday, the registrars and moblisers, Nambooze suggested using their homes and workplaces as registration centres.
She further argued that creating official venues or offices for party register updates could compromise their data security, potentially exposing it to their opponents.
In addition, Nambooze urged the NUP supporters to focus their energy on criticising the ruling party (NRM) than internal disputes.
“You should stop attacking Mathias Mpuuga, Commissioner of Parliament, and direct all the energies to the ruling party headed by President Yoweri Museveni,” she appealed to the NUP supporters.
However, her remarks did not go without criticism from the party members who questioned her commitment to the party’s progress in Greater Mukono.
Rogers Bazanya, the Municipal Deputy Speaker, further accused Nambooze of inconsistency on matters concerning the party.
Bazanye claims that the MP’s close associates have on many occasions opposed the party’s decisions and engaged in online attacks against its leadership.
“They have dedicated most of their energies to abusing the principal (Kyagulanyi) on various social media platforms under her watch,” he explains.
Initially, NUP supporters in Mukono established additional offices at Mukono taxi park to facilitate mobilisation efforts.
Nambooze influenced the closure of these offices, arguing that having multiple locations would divide party members.
Nevertheless, some supporters argue these offices could serve as valuable hubs for mobilisation and registration activities.
Responding to criticisms, Nambooze attributed opposition within Mukono Municipality to a propaganda campaign by Resident District Commissioner to undermine her popularity.
She vowed to resist such efforts and defended her commitment to the party’s cause.
Analysts in the area claim that Nambooze’s concerns stems from insecurity about her position, noting that many former supporters are now dissatisfied with her leadership.
