UNRA: Karuma Bridge Traffic And Closure

The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has issued a crucial traffic advisory concerning the state of the Karuma Bridge, a vital transportation artery in the country.

Recent assessments have revealed significant deterioration in certain structural elements of the bridge, particularly on the Kampala approach lane.

In light of these findings and the imperative to ensure public safety, UNRA has taken decisive action to address the situation promptly.

Karuma Bridge stands as a critical infrastructure asset, facilitating the movement of goods and people across the Nile River.

Its strategic importance cannot be overstated, as it serves as a key link between regions and plays a pivotal role in bolstering economic activities and social connectivity.

The ongoing condition assessment of the Karuma Bridge has unearthed issues on the integrity of its structure.

Notably, the concrete deck, a fundamental component of the bridge, has exhibited signs of deterioration.

This deterioration is attributed in part to the incessant burden imposed by heavy traffic, which has subjected the bridge to undue stress and accelerated wear and tear.

Recognising the gravity of the situation, UNRA has initiated efforts to address the challenges confronting the Karuma Bridge.

Priority has been accorded to the identification and engagement of a competent contractor equipped to undertake the restoration of the bridge structure promptly and effectively.

The objective is to mitigate further deterioration and restore the bridge to a state of optimal functionality.

In the interest of public safety and to facilitate the execution of necessary repair works, UNRA has decided to implement temporary traffic management measures.

Effective from Monday, 6th May 2024, the Karuma Bridge will be closed to all lorries, trailers, and buses. However, passenger vehicles carrying up to 28 passengers will be permitted to utilise the bridge during this period.

It is anticipated that the intervention measures, including the restoration of the Karuma Bridge, will be completed within a timeframe of three months.

“UNRA remains committed to expediting the process while ensuring adherence to the highest standards of quality and safety,” the statement says.
