Mukono diocese closed its savings and credit cooperative society known as Mukono Diocese Sacco limited-MUDI Sacco to create space for resolving mismanagement of funds.
The decision to close the institution followed the arrest and remand of the Sacco Manager Ronald Wasakana a week ago on allegations of mismanaging over shillings 300 million.
Wasakana who is also a lay leader was remanded by Mukono court at Kauga prisons for two weeks.
The Sacco has been running its main branch located at Mukono municipality taxi park where it had merged all its clients following closure of Kangulumira and Lugazi branches last year still over management issues.
Derrick Kaddu, the Diocesan Spokesperson says there is a lot to be handled by the diocesan secretariat before the Sacco opens again to offer services to its clients.
He notes that much as the manager was arrested and remanded, the diocesan authorities are trying to sort out matters internally to avoid any negative effects against their clients.
“We faced a serious setback over various issues including covid-19 outbreak but I want to assure all the people who saved with us that their money is safe. The Sacco goes beyond the manager and his staff, everyone should remember that it is under the diocese”
The Sacco started in 2013 with 30 priests who saved shillings 20, 000 but had expanded to 4000 members with its savings portfolio standing close to shillings 1billion last year.
Statistics at the Diocesan Secretariat indicate that 70 percent of the savings belongs to the diocesan clergy and lay leaders.
Salaries for all diocesan staff and other diocesan institutions such as schools, and health facilities go through MUDI Sacco. One of the diocesan staff who has preferred anonymity has revealed that they have since missed last month’s salary due to the scandals that hit the Sacco.
