Residents of Masaka City line up to receive free medical services during the launch of the MTN Uganda and Zuri Health digital telemedicine platform aimed at expanding access to affordable healthcare through mobile technology.

MTN Uganda Telecommunications Company has partnered with Zuri Health, a licensed digital health solutions provider, to expand access to affordable and reliable healthcare services across the country through mobile technology.

The new innovation allows MTN customers to access professional medical consultations directly through their mobile phones, using SMS or WhatsApp platforms. The service is designed to connect users to qualified medical practitioners who provide guidance on a wide range of health concerns in real time.

Speaking during the launch of the service in Masaka City, Ndagire Musungu, GTM Digital Specialist at MTN Uganda, said the initiative is aimed at making healthcare more accessible and affordable, with consultations starting at just 500 shillings per day.

She noted that the partnership brings together a network of medical professionals across different specialties who are available to respond to client inquiries at any time through digital platforms.

“A client can initiate a WhatsApp or SMS conversation with a doctor from wherever they are and be guided on how their health condition can be appropriately managed,” Musungu said, adding that MTN continues to leverage mobile technology to simplify everyday life for its customers.

According to Musungu, the service reflects MTN’s broader goal of using digital innovation to improve service delivery beyond communication, particularly in critical sectors such as healthcare.

Doctor Flavia Bagatya, a specialist at Zuri Health, said telemedicine represents one of the most transformative innovations in modern healthcare delivery, especially in improving access for underserved communities.

She noted that the model, which has already been tested in Kenya, has proven effective in reducing the burden on physical health facilities.

“Patients using this technology are spared the challenge of travelling long distances and spending hours in queues at health facilities, where they may also be exposed to other infections,” Dr Bagatya said.

She added that the platform also helps curb self-medication by making professional medical advice more affordable and readily available.

“People can now seek medical advice at any time and from wherever they are, at their convenience,” she said.

Dr Bagatya further revealed that the platform has already recorded high uptake, with about 400 queries received within just three days of operation, indicating strong public acceptance.

After consultation, users can be guided on prescriptions and proper management of their conditions, depending on professional assessment.

The service launch was accompanied by a free medical outreach camp held in various parts of Masaka City, where more than 900 people received treatment for different ailments.
