Obongi County Member of Parliament Kaps Hassan Fungaroo has alleged that unknown men attempted to abduct him from his residence in Arua City on Saturday morning.
According to Fungaroo, a group of men travelling in a tinted white Toyota Wish arrived at his home in Ondoriku Cell, Tanganyika Ward, and began asking boda boda riders for directions to his residence.
The riders reportedly became suspicious and questioned the men about their identity and the reason for seeking the legislator’s home.
One of the occupants, described as wearing jeans and an army-green T-shirt, allegedly stepped out of the vehicle and claimed he had come from Gulu. The group later drove away after sensing resistance from residents.
Fungaroo said he was inside his house preparing to leave for Arua City’s central business district when the events unfolded.
Speaking to journalists later in the day, the legislator questioned why anyone seeking his attention would resort to following him instead of using the established procedures for summoning Members of Parliament.
He also urged residents of the West Nile sub-region to reject what he described as attempts to intimidate or silence leaders from the area, arguing that such actions undermine political growth and democratic participation.
Residents who witnessed the incident said a motorcycle rider first arrived and parked near the MP’s home before the Toyota Wish appeared shortly afterwards.
Sabir Hassan Cucu, the LC I Chairperson of Ondoriku Cell, said he confronted one of the men, who appeared nervous and maintained that he had travelled from Gulu.
According to Cucu, the man eventually returned to the vehicle, and the group departed after residents continued questioning them.
Cucu called on residents to remain vigilant, saying security concerns affect communities regardless of political affiliation.
Another resident, Habib Hawaiz, claimed that the same vehicle had been seen in the neighbourhood twice during the night preceding the alleged attempt.
Faidah Aminah, a neighbour, said residents were alarmed by the incident and appealed to authorities to strengthen security in the area.
Fungaroo linked the alleged attempted abduction to his recent political engagements, including his participation in opposition calls for the release of former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago and demands by West Nile leaders for the release of UPDF officer Colonel Ondoga, who he said has spent nearly a year in detention.
Efforts to obtain a comment from the police were unsuccessful. Calls made to West Nile Regional Police spokesperson Josephine Angucia went unanswered, while the Assistant Resident City Commissioner for Arua Central Division, Judith Bako, said she was not aware of the matter.
