Man Arrested Over Suspected Murder, Cannibalism Claims Emerge

Police in Kyenjojo District are holding a 40-year-old man in connection with the suspected killing of his partner, in a case that has shocked residents and raised disturbing allegations of cannibalism.

The suspect, identified as Richard Mwesige, also known locally as Baby Nsolo, was arrested on May 2 at his residence in Kihara Cell, Kyarusozi Town Council following information provided by members of the community.

Authorities say investigations were triggered after concerns grew over the unexplained disappearance of 35-year-old Lukia Karungi, who had not been seen for several weeks.

Karungi, a resident of the same area, had been in a relationship with the suspect, and the two share an infant child.

The matter was formally reported to police by the Kihara Cell LC I Chairperson, Asaaba Aheebwa, who cited both Karungi’s prolonged absence and what he described as unusual conduct by Mwesige.

A search operation was subsequently carried out at the suspect’s home, where officers reportedly made a gruesome discovery.

According to Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson Vincent Twesige, decomposing human remains were recovered from the house.

Investigators say a human head was found concealed in a polythene bag and suspended from the roof, alongside other body parts, including bones and clothing believed to belong to the missing woman.

The recovered remains have since been taken to Kyenjojo General Hospital for postmortem examination and DNA testing to establish the identity of the deceased.

Local leaders have alleged that the suspect may have engaged in cannibalistic acts, although police have not yet confirmed these claims as investigations continue.

Mwesige remains in custody as detectives work to piece together the circumstances surrounding Karungi’s disappearance and suspected death.
