Former Kampala Lord Mayor and president of the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF), Erias Lukwago, has been charged with misprision of treason and remanded to Luzira Prison.
Lukwago appeared before the Makindye Chief Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday afternoon, where he denied the charge brought against him by the state.
Misprision of treason is an offence that arises when a person is alleged to have had knowledge of plans to unlawfully overthrow or undermine the government but failed to report such information to the relevant authorities.
The veteran opposition politician and senior lawyer was arrested on Monday during a security operation at his residence, an incident that sparked criticism from opposition leaders, members of the legal fraternity, and human rights activists.
Concerns were raised over the circumstances of his arrest and the period he spent in detention before being presented in court.
Prosecutors allege that Lukwago failed to disclose information relating to an alleged treasonous plot. Details of the accusations are expected to emerge as investigations continue.
Following his appearance in court, the magistrate remanded him to Luzira Prison until June 22, 2026, when he is expected to return to court for further proceedings.
Lukwago’s prosecution adds to a growing list of opposition figures facing legal challenges in recent months, a development that is likely to intensify debate over political freedoms and the administration of justice in Uganda.
