A 34-year-old security guard has died after shooting himself in the head while on duty at Kampala University’s Masaka campus.
The deceased, identified as Measerch Matte, was employed by Timecop Security Company Ltd and had been stationed at the university for some time.
According to sources at the university, Matte was on night duty when he took his life at around 1am.
Masaka Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Twaha Kasirye, confirmed the incident, stating that the body was taken to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Kasirye added that the firearm used in the incident was recovered and taken as evidence to assist ongoing investigations.
“Preliminary information suggests that Matte had long standing family disputes which may have contributed to the tragedy,” Kasirye said.
He condemned the act and urged security guards to seek counselling or report personal struggles to local authorities rather than resorting to suicide.
A university staff member, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed relief that the incident occurred during the night, as it meant students were not present to witness the distressing event.
“It gives some kind of relief that it happened at night because the students did not witness the tragic incident firsthand, which could have been traumatic,” the source said.
