Allen Kagina, Executive Director of the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA), has ordered an investigation into allegations of bribery and extortion at the Mbarara Fixed Weighbridge.
This comes after complaints from Sino truck drivers, who claim they were forced to pay Ugx500,000 per truck for allegedly exceeding weight limits, with no receipts issued.
Following a standoff between the drivers and officials in Rwampara District, three UNRA officials, Mugabe Hannibal, Mugisha Charles, and Nanyonjo Justine, were arrested on Kagina’s orders.
She also transferred all staff, including police officers working at the weighbridge.
Rwizi Region Police Commander Alfred Bangambaki confirmed that an investigation has begun, and a general inquiry file has been opened to probe the drivers’ claims.
Kagina also pledged to set up a grievance hotline for further complaints.
