Police in Kiira region have confirmed the death of 17-year-old Anisha Kwagala, a Senior Four student at St. John SSS Wakitaka in Jinja City, who passed away on Monday due to heart failure.
According to her classmates, Kwagala collapsed in the dormitory around 6:30 am after developing sudden complications shortly after putting on her school uniform.
Teachers were alerted and contacted her parents, who arranged for her to be taken to a nearby clinic.
She was later referred to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
In the wake of her death, social media posts falsely suggested that Kwagala had died following an altercation in the dormitory, sparking outrage among parents and residents.
This led to a tense situation as angry community members stormed the school, demanding an explanation.
School authorities called in police to control the crowds, locking out the parents to prevent further unrest.
An autopsy report from Jinja Regional Referral Hospital confirmed that Kwagala succumbed to a heart attack, citing a long-standing heart condition that had weakened both ventricles.
Her father, Abdullah Suuta, the Butagaya sub-county chairperson, revealed that Kwagala had been battling heart disease since childhood and was on daily medication to manage her condition.
Suuta, who had visited his daughter the day before her death, expressed deep sorrow over the family’s loss after years of efforts to manage her health.
Kwagala’s class teacher, Charles Mugulusi, said the school was aware of her condition, and classmates had been assigned to watch her during the night.
He described Kwagala as a bright and dedicated student, having been the best performer in her class during the previous term’s mock exams.
Kiira Regional Police spokesperson James Mubi extended condolences to the family and urged the public to refrain from spreading misinformation, which had caused unnecessary chaos during an already difficult time.
