The Greater Masaka Journalists Association (GREMAJA) has strongly condemned the violent attack on journalist Frank Bwekumbule of Impact FM, describing the incident as a “cowardly assault” not only on an individual reporter but also on press freedom in Uganda.

In a statement released on 14th April 2026, GREMAJA confirmed that Bwekumbule survived an attack by unknown assailants who brutally assaulted him as he was returning home on the night of 13th April.

The journalist sustained severe injuries following the incident, which occurred at around 10:30 p.m. near Kimaanya Primary School.

The association said the attack represents a worrying escalation of threats against journalists operating in the Greater Masaka region and beyond, warning that such acts create fear and undermine professionalism and independence within the media sector.

“This heinous act is not only an attack on him but also a direct assault on press freedom and media independence,” GREMAJA noted, adding that journalists play a critical role in informing the public and holding power to account, and therefore must be protected at all times.

The association has urged security authorities to act swiftly, calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack.

GREMAJA specifically appealed for the incident to be treated with urgency given that it occurred within an area reportedly covered by police CCTV surveillance.

GREMAJA further called on authorities to identify, arrest, and prosecute all individuals involved in the assault, while also strengthening measures to guarantee the safety and protection of journalists in the course of their duties.

The association also appealed to stakeholders in the media industry and the general public to stand in solidarity with journalists facing increasing risks in the line of duty.

“We wish Mr. Bwekumbule a quick and full recovery,” the statement added.

The press release was signed off by Antonio Kalyango, the Public Relations Officer of GREMAJA, who reiterated the association’s commitment to defending press freedom and supporting journalists working under increasingly hostile conditions.
