A devastating fire has left D&K Hong Tu 1987, a motorcycle spare-parts warehouse in Mbalala Industrial Park, Mukono, grappling with significant losses and operational challenges.

The warehouse, measuring 80 by 80 feet, was engulfed in flames on January 8 at approximately 7:40 pm, destroying goods worth millions of shillings.

Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident, adding that no injuries were reported.

“A fire response team was promptly deployed to the scene. After struggling to contain the fire, reinforcements arrived from the fire brigade headquarters in Kampala with two additional fire tenders,” Onyango stated.

Preliminary police investigations suggest the fire might have been caused by a short circuit, potentially linked to welding activities that had been ongoing at the warehouse since the start of the year.

The aftermath of the fire has left the warehouse management in a precarious position, struggling to meet customer orders while addressing inquiries about the cause of the blaze.

A worker, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that the investor is facing mounting pressure to recover lost inventory and restore operations.

Compounding the challenges, management is reportedly under scrutiny regarding the origin of the fire and documentation for revenue clearance of the affected goods by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA).

URA Licensing and Clearance

Lamu Wejuli Malaba, the clearing and forwarding agent for D&K Hong Tu 1987, clarified that the warehouse has been licensed by URA since 2018.

He emhpasised that the spare parts are cleared directly from China before being stored in Uganda.

As the warehouse counts its losses, questions surrounding compliance, operational safety, and recovery measures loom large.

Efforts to rebuild and resume normal operations will be critical to restoring customer trust and sustaining the business.

Authorities are expected to complete their investigations and provide clarity on the incident’s root cause.

The fire serves as a stark reminder of the importance of stringent safety protocols in industrial operations to prevent such catastrophic incidents.
