Washington, D.C. — What began as a seemingly routine White House media event spiraled into an unprecedented public feud between President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk, marking the most dramatic rupture yet between the two former allies.
On Thursday morning, President Trump stunned reporters when he publicly criticized Musk, expressing “disappointment” over the Tesla and SpaceX CEO’s recent vocal opposition to his sweeping domestic agenda bill, what Trump has proudly called the “Big, Beautiful Bill.”
“Elon and I had a great relationship. I don’t know if we will anymore,” Trump said from the White House briefing room, less than a week after they had exchanged praise during Musk’s last day as head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a role in which he held special government employee status.
The unraveling of their alliance appears to have been catalyzed by Musk’s sharp rebuke of Trump’s massive legislative proposal, an omnibus package addressing taxes, federal spending cuts, energy policy, and border security. The bill recently passed the House but faces steep opposition in the Senate.
Musk’s Exit from Washington
Last month, Musk announced his departure from the Trump administration, ending his brief but high-profile tenure as head of DOGE.
At the time, his congressional supporters insisted the exit had no bearing on the future of the agency.
Legislative Flashpoint
This week, Musk unleashed a flurry of criticisms against the GOP-led bill.
On Tuesday, he called the legislation a “disgusting abomination,” citing projections that it would significantly balloon the national deficit.
While critics have speculated that the bill’s elimination of electric vehicle (EV) tax incentives might have triggered Musk’s anger, the billionaire denied any personal stake.
Trump Fires Back
Trump did not mince words. “Elon knew every aspect of this bill. He knew it better than almost anybody, and he never had a problem until right after he left,” the president said, suggesting Musk’s objections were more about sour grapes than policy.
Trump also floated the idea of canceling government contracts with Musk’s companies, including SpaceX. “We’re looking into everything,” he said.
Despite Trump’s reference to a federal EV mandate, which does not exist, he pointed to the rollback of incentives like the $7,500 EV tax credit (passed under the Biden administration) as a supposed trigger for Musk’s backlash.
Musk Escalates: Impeachment, Epstein Allegations, and SpaceX Threats
Within hours, Musk struck back in real-time on his social media platform, X, challenging Trump’s claims and taking the feud into scorched-earth territory.
Denial and Defiance
Musk refuted any special knowledge of the bill’s contents and reiterated that his opposition stemmed from broader fiscal concerns, not EV tax credits.
Impeachment Call
In a shocking move, Musk responded “Yes” to a user calling for Trump’s impeachment and the ascension of Vice President JD Vance to the presidency.
SpaceX Fallout
Perhaps most consequentially, Musk announced that SpaceX would begin decommissioning its Dragon spacecraft “immediately,” citing Trump’s suggestion to terminate government contracts.
The decision, if enacted, would deal a significant blow to NASA’s operations. The Dragon capsule is currently the only spacecraft capable of returning large quantities of cargo and astronauts to Earth and is critical to sustaining the International Space Station.
Conspiracy Theories
Musk also alleged, without evidence, that Trump is “in the Epstein files,” a reference to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and suggested that this is why those documents have not been made public.
“Time to drop the really big bomb: @realDonaldTrump is in the Epstein files. That is the real reason they have not been made public,” Musk posted.
The White House has not commented on the accusation, and Musk did not clarify how he would have obtained such records.
While Trump has previously said he would release Epstein-related files, most public records from the case were already disclosed in a tranche released earlier this year under Attorney General Pam Bondi.
No credible evidence has emerged linking Trump to criminal conduct related to Epstein.
GOP in Damage Control Mode
House Speaker Mike Johnson attempted to salvage both the legislation and party unity.
In a post on X, Johnson responded to Musk’s criticism by defending the bill as “the LARGEST mandatory spending cut to the federal government in history” and part of a broader “multi-stage plan” for economic recovery.
“The same CONSISTENT Mike Johnson who has ALWAYS supported the America First Agenda,” he concluded.
The Broader Implications
This deeply personal and increasingly unhinged battle between two of the Republican Party’s most high-profile figures threatens to upend not only legislative priorities but also the future of U.S. space policy and conservative tech alliances.
With Musk hinting at the formation of a new political party and Trump eyeing re-election amid growing friction with longtime allies, the showdown signals a major fracture in the coalition that helped propel Trump to power.
Whether this public feud leads to political realignment or simply more chaos remains to be seen.
