The Electoral Commission has warned its officials against engaging in corruption during the forthcoming Local Council One (LC1) chairperson elections, emphasizing that all nomination services will be provided free of charge.
Speaking ahead of the nomination exercise, Kayunga District Returning Officer Elizabeth Namirembe said the commission will begin issuing nomination forms for LC1 chairperson candidates on Thursday, July 9, 2026, at parish headquarters across the district.
She stressed that aspirants will not be required to pay any money to obtain or return the nomination forms.
“Candidates will collect the forms, complete them and return them without paying any fees. Any electoral official found demanding or accepting money from aspirants will face disciplinary action,” Elizabeth warned.
The returning officer said the directive is part of the Electoral Commission’s efforts to ensure transparency, fairness and accountability throughout the electoral process.
Namirembe also urged eligible residents to complete voter registration before the exercise closes on Friday, warning that anyone who fails to register will not be eligible to vote or contest for the LC1 chairperson position.
She explained that residents whose National Identity Cards were registered in different villages would still be allowed to register in their current villages of residence, provided their local LC1 chairperson confirms that they genuinely live there.
According to Namirembe, the district electoral team completed training last week and is now finalizing preparations for the elections, including updating the voters’ register.
She further appealed to candidates and their supporters to conduct peaceful and orderly campaigns, noting that LC1 leaders play a critical role in resolving community issues and delivering services at the grassroots.
“These elections are important because LC1 chairpersons are the first point of contact for many community matters. We therefore expect candidates to campaign peacefully and within the law,” she said.
Polling for the LC1 chairperson elections is scheduled for Tuesday, July 28, 2026, with voting expected to take place at village polling stations across Kayunga District and the rest of the country.
Interest in the village leadership positions is already high, with several aspiring candidates reportedly printing campaign posters and mobilizing support ahead of the official nomination exercise.
