Six senior bishops serving in different dioceses of the Church of Uganda are expected to leave office between the end of this year and early 2027 after reaching the church’s compulsory retirement age of 65.

Those due for retirement include John Wilson Nandaah, Amos Magezi, Patrick Wakula, Gaddi Anjuna, Sheldon Mwesigwa and Dan Zoreka.

The announcement was made by Samuel Gidudu while presiding over a confirmation ceremony for about 30 children at Bumwambu Parish Church in Bulago Archdeaconry, located in Lusha Sub-county, Bulambuli District.

Bishop Gidudu explained that the impending retirements will pave the way for the selection of new diocesan leaders ahead of the anticipated election of a new Archbishop of the Church of Uganda in 2027.

Under the Church of Uganda Constitution, individuals aspiring to become bishops must be aged between 45 and 65 years, have served in priesthood for a minimum of ten years, possess either a Bachelor’s degree in Theology or a Diploma in Theology together with another university degree, and be committed born-again Christians married in church. Prospective candidates are also expected to demonstrate integrity and a distinguished record of ministry.

During his sermon, Bishop Gidudu appealed to parents and guardians to nurture children in Christian values, arguing that faith-based guidance is essential in shaping disciplined and responsible citizens.

He expressed concern over increasing cases of substance abuse among young people in the Bugisu sub-region, blaming some parents for failing to restrain children from indulging in alcohol and narcotic drugs.
