Reports and online claims linking former Speaker Anita Annet Among to investigations into alleged unexplained wealth continue to generate debate within political and business circles, raising concern among investors and companies previously associated with influential political figures.
Attention has recently shifted to the Yogi Group of Companies in Njeru Municipality, Buikwe District, as well as other foreign-owned companies in Luweero, Mbale, and other parts of the country, after photos resurfaced showing Among visiting some of these companies during campaign activities and posing with several of their directors.
The images have fueled speculation online as authorities reportedly intensify scrutiny of the sources of wealth and political connections of senior leaders.
The controversy escalated after the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and the PLU reportedly withdrew political endorsement of both Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa amid allegations of misuse of taxpayer resources. However, no court ruling has been issued proving criminal wrongdoing against either leader.
Political sources further claim that President Yoweri Museveni convened a high-level security and political meeting at State House Nakasero on Friday night to discuss concerns surrounding the conduct and spending habits of senior government officials, following reports about a luxury Rolls-Royce vehicle allegedly linked to Among.
Unconfirmed reports also alleged that security operatives conducted an overnight operation at Among’s residence in Nakasero in the early hours of Saturday as part of wider anti-corruption investigations. By press time, government agencies had not released an official statement confirming the alleged operation.
The unfolding developments have reportedly sent shockwaves through sections of the business community, especially among investors and companies that built close ties with politically connected figures in recent years.
Analysts warn that if investigations deepen, several corporate entities and individuals could face increased scrutiny from state agencies over procurement deals, political financing, and wealth accumulation.
Among and her close associates have previously denied allegations of corruption and maintain that her wealth and properties were legally acquired.
On Sunday evening, she withdrew her bid for the speakership, saying she was also available to assist with the alleged corruption investigations.
