Trial in NRM Registrar Murder Case Delayed

The hearing of a high-profile murder case involving the killing of former Bundibugyo NRM Registrar, Robert Aguma Kifunda, has been postponed by the High Court in Fort Portal.

The matter was scheduled for mention before Justice Vincent Wagona on Monday, but the court deferred the case to the next criminal session, with the hearing date yet to be announced.

While addressing court, Justice Wagona said the case still requires adequate preparation and sufficient time for a full hearing. He noted that the ongoing criminal session is nearing conclusion and the court is also expected to begin handling election petition matters following the recently concluded polls.

The three accused persons — Swaibu Sunday Bwambale, Abdul Kayanja and Hasan Babakari — were remanded again to Katojo Government Prison as they await the new hearing date.

Prosecution alleges that the suspects participated in the murder and aggravated robbery of Aguma in March 2022 after reportedly stealing Shs42 million from him.

Court documents indicate that Aguma had travelled to Fort Portal where he withdrew the money from a bank before setting off for Bundibugyo in a vehicle allegedly driven by Bwambale.

Investigators claim the suspects later convinced the deceased to engage in what appeared to be a gold business deal. Upon reaching Bundibugyo that evening, the group allegedly attacked and strangled him before sharing the stolen cash among themselves.

According to investigators, Aguma’s body was later recovered from a stream in Bimala Cell, Kanyansimbi Ward in Bundibugyo Town Council, where it had allegedly been dumped after the killing.
