Integrity is often described as doing the right thing even when no one is watching. It goes beyond simple honesty.

It entails a commitment to doing what is just, transparent, and accountable, regardless of the challenges or temptations to do otherwise.

Integrity lies at the core of effective leadership, whether in government, business, or community service.

It further ensures that decisions and actions are made with the well-being of others in mind, promoting trust and respect among individuals and communities.

Public officials often face temptations and situations that could compromise their morals, but it takes great strength and resilience to remain dedicated to their principles and serve the people with transparency and fairness.

However, the National Citizens’ Integrity Awards (NCIA) was established to honour individuals who exemplify integrity, courage, and selflessness. The NCIA highlights the extraordinary contributions of ordinary Ugandans working to uplift their communities.

This year, the awards celebrate a new wave of transformational leaders whose dedication to justice, environmental conservation, and community empowerment is shaping a brighter future for Uganda.

From the Central/Buganda region, five individuals were selected from a pool of 112 nominations for the National Citizen Integrity Awards 2024. The nominees were thoroughly evaluated by an independent regional vetting committee. Among the 112 nominations, 25 were women and 87 were men.

What Are the National Citizens’ Integrity Awards?

The NCIA was established to spotlight individuals whose actions embody integrity and accountability in public service, business, and community leadership. Organised annually, these awards promote:

1. Transparency and Good Governance: Honoring leaders who fight corruption and promote fairness.

2. Community Transformation: Recognising efforts that positively impact society through innovation, advocacy, or service.

3. Resilience and Courage: Celebrating those who stand firm in the face of adversity to uphold justice and integrity.

Celebrating these unsung heroes with these awards inspires others to emulate their values, boosting a culture of honesty, accountability, and community-centered development across Uganda.

Meet the 2024 Nominees from Buganda Region

Chief Magistrate Elizabeth Akullo Ogwal

A paragon of judicial integrity, Magistrate Akullo Ogwal has become a symbol of hope in Uganda’s legal system.

Known for her impartial rulings, even against influential figures, she has consistently championed anti-corruption campaigns.

Her legacy includes innovating accessible legal tools such as pictorial staff charts and serving marginalised communities with humility.

One memorable moment was her kneeling to assist a disabled councilor in Kitgum to take the oath, reflecting her commitment to justice and inclusion.

Stella Alibateese

As the director of the Personal Data Protection Office, Alibateese has achieved remarkable results despite operating with a skeleton staff and a constrained budget.

Under her leadership, the office has maintained a strict code of ethics, offering free consultations and training to protect Ugandans’ data.

Her dedication to integrity and hard work makes her a deserving nominee in this year’s NCIA.

Haruna Kyeyune Kasolo

Through his Kasolo Foundation, the State Minister for Microfinance has transformed lives in Kyotera.

From low-interest loans to vocational training programs, Kasolo’s initiatives empower women, youth, and underprivileged groups.

“Kasolo’s heart is as big as his vision for Kyotera,” remarked one of his nominators. His work has addressed unemployment, supported education, and improved community livelihoods, making him a beacon of hope in the region.

Amiri Kiggundu

At 29, Kiggundu has emerged as a fearless advocate for justice, environmental conservation, and community development.

His efforts to distribute 100,000 tree seedlings and advocate for the silverfish trade have benefited thousands in Buikwe district.

Despite facing imprisonment for standing against land grabbing, Kiggundu’s resolve remains unshaken.

His entrepreneurial spirit and leadership in Kiyindi Town Council have inspired many to believe in the power of community-driven change.

The Legacy of the NCIA

Since its inception, the National Citizens’ Integrity Awards have recognised individuals who remind us that integrity is not just a value but a powerful tool for transformation.

These awards serve as a platform to amplify their efforts and inspire collective action toward a just and equitable Uganda.

The 2024 nominees reflect the award’s ethos, proving that integrity, when coupled with resilience and vision, can create lasting change.

As Uganda celebrates these unsung heroes, the NCIA continues championing a future where justice, transparency, and community well-being prevail.

Grooming Citizenship For a Better Society

According to Kayinga Yisito Muddu, the National Coordinator -Community Transformation Foundation Network (COTFONE), every family regardless of their status can nurture their children into people with unshaken integrity,” he stated.

Kayinga explained that most of the nominees were nurtured into heroes who could withstand all sorts of pressures and continue serving diligently.

According to Harvard Business Review: The Role of Integrity in Leadership, integrity should be instilled early, beginning in childhood and continuing throughout adulthood.

The foundation of integrity is often laid in the home, where children learn values such as honesty, responsibility, and respect for others.

It indicates that as they grow, schools and communities play a crucial role in reinforcing these values, teaching young people about fairness, accountability, and the importance of making ethical choices, even in difficult situations.

“Instilling integrity early on helps individuals develop a strong moral compass, making them less susceptible to corruption and more likely to contribute positively to society.” the review stated.

The impact of strengthening integrity in individuals extends far beyond personal behavior, it has the potential to transform entire societies, according to  The Atlantic: How Integrity Shapes Society.

When people value integrity, they are more likely to act in ways that benefit their communities, ensuring fairness in governance, reducing corruption, and building trust in public institutions.

“In turn, societies prioritising integrity create environments where good citizens can thrive, promoting a culture of accountability and respect for the rule of law.”
